King Athelstan
Saxon Coronation workshops at All Saints Church
On the 4th September 925AD, King Athelstan was crowned King of the Anglo-Saxons in a church that we now know as All Saints Church, Kingston.
He went on to become the first to claim the title of King of England. But it was no easy feat to gain that title, and keeping it was more dramatic than anyone could have foreseen.
Our founder, Sarah, is Storyteller in Residence at All Saints' church and hosts coronation workshops for KS2 children studying the Saxons.
These workshops include:
- The story of how King Athelstan rose to fame, and how his family worked for three generations to get him there
- A whole-class re-enactment of the coronation by the students
- A Saxon Coin handling workshop
Workshops are 45 minutes, and are priced at £115 per class.
In addition, there is a trail available that you can follow around Kingston related to the Saxon Kings after the workshop.
Our Year 4 Anglo-Saxon workshop was a fantastic experience! The children loved the opportunity to dress up and step back in time to re enact King Athelstan's Coronation. Sarah was so enthusiastic and engaged the children so well with her story-telling experience!

We work in partnership with Kingston Museum who offer a Saxon workshop where students get to learn what Saxon life was like in Kingston and handle artefacts.
Each workshop at the museum is also 45 minutes long, so one class can start there whilst another starts with us at All Saints Church, and then swap over.
Story Storks can also handle the booking of the museum, so you only have one person you need to coordinate with.
