King Athelstan

Putting the King in Kingston since 925AD

King Athelstan was the first King to rule over all of England and it all started when he was crowned right here in Kingston.

Thanks to our lovely friends at The Heritage Lottery Fund we full researched the story of King Athelstan and discovered that he was an absolute legend.  Brought up by his fierce Aunty Aethelflaed, he fought off the Vikings and became the first King to rule all of England.  He was also the first to wear a crown and have his head put on a coin wearing said crown.  Some of the laws he introduced we still follow today and the current coronation ceremony has its roots in the one he wrote for himself.

And yes, just like the kids at the local primary school, he wore purple!

We've turned this story into one of our amazing interactive storytelling workshops for kids from 3 to 7yr, though the adults seem to enjoy it as much as the kids.

If you'd like to see us telling this historically funny tale then you can come and join us at IYAF 2021 on the 8th and 9th July at Kingston Museum.  Performances are at 10am and 12 noon (bring a picnic to that one).  Places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.  See our What's On Page for more details.

We hope to see you there, but in the meantime, if you'd like to know a bit more about King Athelstan and Kingston's Saxon history then you can read all about it on these blogs.
